Steve Vaitones gave a wrap-up on the Masters Championship:

850 entrants age 30-98. He has received a steady stream of congratulations and thank you’s from participants. In general the meet was good, there were a few areas that seemed to be a little thin in officials, and there had been some confusion regarding check in.

Steve thanked Marja who did a lot of work that really tied the meet together.

Steve also noted that the web page with results and pictures that Ken Robichaud had taken was receiving comments, and had 4,240 hits to date.

Phil Byrne added that he had heard nothing but positive comments regarding the Masters meet. He also noted that the entry fee of $50.00 for the pentathlon seemed a bit high and may have kept some potential participants away.

Womens LDR: Molly Taber & Jill Gaitenby were pleased to announce that Steve Vaitones had confirmed that the top 2 open and masters women from the New England Championship 10K will receive a complimentary entry and overnight accommodations for the Avon Running 10k Series for Women event in Hartford, CT. Brief review of the Law Enforcement 1/2 Marathon.

Masters T&F: Ed Damels reported that he had been asked by the Masters committee if the New England association was planning on bidding for the 2003 Indoor Masters Championship. Ed also suggested that if the association does decide to put in a bid that we create a planning or organizing committee to help spread out some of the responsibilities, to ensure that the meet continues to improve. Ed also noted his concern of the meet becoming stagnant or declining in quality if the association continues to host the meet the same way each year. Ed also announced that the Eastern Regional Masters Championship will be held at Springfield College.

Track & Field: Steve Vaitones noted that the office had just about finished updating the outdoor schedule. The office had no confirmation on a JO site but was in contact with Worcester State on a weekly basis trying to work out the details.

Steve also reported that there was still no written confirmation from Northeastern University regarding the use of its track facility for the NU Twilight as well as the New England Outdoor Championships. There was also no word yet from NU regarding the schedule for Twilight, although it is expected to remain similar to previous years.

Tom Petranoff announced that Nike would be delivering the Track in a Box shortly, and that the association should begin to consider how and where the best place to distribute this product would be. Tom’s voiced his concern that the new product be placed with organizations that will use it and gain something from it.

Tom also suggested to the board that we begin to talk about grant money being offered by the tobacco industry that can be used in a “No Smoking” campaign. Tom Derderian motioned for a committee to be assigned, Phil Byrne seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Tom P. also voiced his concern over recent events in international competition where a large number of athletes had recently tested positive for banned substances. It was decided that Tom would write up an informational piece that the office would distribute to local athletes through club mailings, newsletters, and the web site.

Race Walking: Justin Kuo announced the early dates of the Race Walking Grand Prix: The Clam Digger 5k (April) in R.I., 20K June 4 in RI. A 1 5k/30k is also being held in RI.

Cross Country: Tom Derderian announced that he has set up a cross country race at Tufts University on September 16. The race will follow a collegiate race. Tom also inquired about having a cross country Grand Prix. The idea received positive feedback, and Tom Derderian is currently looking for a name.

Treasurer’s Report: Jim O’Brien distributed a profit and loss comparison and a balance sheet. The best time for an audit of the USATF-NE office was discussed, and should occur sometime after April 15, 2000.

9:23 PM Motion to Adjourn.
