SWIFT 800S, THUNDERSTORM HIGHLIGHT REEBOK/BOSTON I
        DEDHAM MA, June 6 — Despite being delayed by a thunderstorm for 30 minutes, the Reebok/Boston High Performance I featured swift middle distance performances highlighted by meet record wins Reebok Enclave teammates Miesha Marzell and Mike Schroer at 800, while fellow Enclaver Andre Williams lowering the meet standard over 3000 at Tuesday's meet in Dedham (Mass).
        Marzell powered away from the field over the 2nd lap to lop off 4.5 secs from Clare Taylor's 2:06.76 meet record in the women's 800. Marzell finished in 2:02.37, well ahead of the Army's Amy Ross (2:03.77).
        In the men's 800, Schroer edged James Madison's Jason Long 1:47.63 to 1:47.83, as the two dipped under Mike Stember's meet record of 1:48.34. Also slipping under the meet record was former World Indoor medalist Erik Nedeau, who recorded a 1:48.24.
        Williams and Nick Rogers followed pacemaker (and meet record holder in 7:59.08) Brian Baker through four laps in 4:16. Rogers took over until the bell, when Williams started to sprint for home. Williams won in an easied-up 7:57.35, while Wisconsin star Matt Downin (7:58.38) also finished under the old standard.
        Former Providence College standout Marie McMahon (9:24.69) outsprinted Laura Baker (9:25.01), while Canadian's Jeremy Deere (3:42.95) and Robyn Meagher (4:15.68) ran away with the 1500s.
        CanAm action resumes on Saturday night with the Reebok/Boston High Performance II meet, also at Dedham.

DANDENEAU, WATCKE ALL BUSINESS AT CHASE CORPORATE CHALLENGE
        Boston MA, June 29 — Familiar running faces took to the streets of Boston representing their company instead of their familiar club at the annual Chase Corporate Challenge 3.5 mile race. Jim Dandeneau took race honrs as he edged Tom Doody by 3 seconds, as a pack of 5 was together at the 1/2 way point. New Balance runner Molly Watcke, just 2 days after running the 5000 at the National T&F championships, won the women's division by over a minute. Event director Conventures, Inc and Chase Bank generously make donations to USATF-NE and to local member clubs who provide many vital volunteers for this event, which is the largest road race in New England.

BOSTON INTERNATIONAL, CMS TAKE TRACK TITLES
        DEDHAM MA, June 19 — Boston International men and Central Mass Striders women ran to team wins at the 1999 USATF New England championship meet, held in conjunction with Northeastern University Twilight #5 and sponsored by Reebok. Both teams earned their first ever outdoor track team titles (BI had won the women's title in the early 1970's).
        Leading the BI team was Najimu Gabisi with wins in the 110 hurdles and triple jump, and Lamonte Brown with a gold and a silver in the two hurdle events.
        For CMS, Jen Toomey won the 200 and 400, and ran on the 4x400 relay which turned in a 3:49.28.
        Two meet records were set; Reebok's Amy Rudolph led from the gun for a Championship record of 4:12.76, and Mike Walsh spun the discus 196'10"; they earned two of the four the outstanding athlete awards, based on scoring tables. POWELL, FREEMAN WIN JUNIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
        TEXAS, June 19-20 — Andy Powell (Oliver Ames HS, North Easton MA) and Jacob Freeman (Bishop Hendricken HS, RI) won individual National Championships at the USATF Junior National Championships held June 19-20 at West Texas State U.
        Powell, who runs for the Southeastern Mass Personal Best TC, turned in a spectacular day, winning two races on Sunday. The Mass. HS mile record holder first won the 1500 in 3:49.81 with a margin of nearly 2 seconds, and then returned to take the 5000 as well in 14;51.81. In the latter, he beat a pair of Stanford Univerisity freshman who be his future teammates in the fall.
        Hammer thrower Freeman, headed to Manhatten in the fall, spun the 16 lb hammer 213'3", a mark bettered by only the US Junior record he set earlier in the year.
        The top 2 finishers in each event earned spots on the US Junior Team which will compete in the Pan American Junior T&F Championships July 9-11. Joining the above athletes for the meet in Miami will be Dartmouth freshman Adam Wallace, runner-up in the 10,000 at 31:33.31, and Rutgers freshman Melissa Houston, RI HS product, who took second in the hammer 185'8".

        DEDHAM MA, June 5 — The ever-competive NU Twilight Meet #3 again featured outstanding performances and USATF qualifiers along with meet records in the men's 200, the women's discus and the women's javelin.
        Brian Spoonire of the Reebok Enclave won the men's 5000m, leading 11 men under 14 minutes. Amy Rudolph notched her 2nd Twilight Victory, out distancing Asha Gidi of Ethiopia in the women's 5000m.
        Miesha Marzell won the women's 800m for the second time in as many weeks.

        DEDHAM MA, May 29 — NU Twilight #2 produced 14 USATF Qualifying Performances. Ray Hughes led 3 others to a qualifier in the steeple, Pat McGrath of the NYAC won the hammer competition which also had 4 individuals meet the standard.
        Miesha Marzell led wire to wire in the women's 800m, pulling along Jen Toomey of CMS, who ran 2:05.24.
        Enclaver Mike Schroer won the men's 800 in 1:47.95, his teammate, John Honnerkamp won a competitive 1500 in 3:41.58. The women's event was won by New Balance's Debbie Marshall in 4:15.51, a time good enough for a trip to Eugene.

FREEMAN'S THROW BREAKS HS RECORD
        WARWICK, RI, May 29 — Jacob Freeman (SR, Bishop Hendricken High School, Warwick, RI) won the 12# hammer throw with a throw of 253'03" at the Hendricken Invitational on May 29, 1999. This throw breaks Freeman's national high school record of 249'06" set on May 8, 1999 at the Rick Schomp Memorial Invitational at South Kingstown Junior High School, Wakefield, RI.         DEDHAM MA, May 22 — Seven individuals qualified for the for the USA National Championships at the first meet in the 1999 Northeastern U Twilight Track & Field Series. Brian Spoonire and Terrence Mahon met the standard in the 10,000 meters, and the remaining five did so in throwing events; Mike Walsh qualified in the discus, Mark McGehearty, Dan Bourque, and Jacob Freeman did so in the men's hammer, and Anna Norgren met the mark in the women's hammer. FAST MILE ON TAP FOR FRIDAY
        BOSTON, May 19 — This Friday, May 21, Coogan's Moonlight Mile will run at 8:00 p.m. during the League Meet at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro MA.
        The entry list, assembled by Bishop Feehan HS alumnus Mark Coogan, is one of the better mile fields assembled in New England in recent years. The track has been resurfaced in the last year, and should produce a fast time.

CHASE CORPORATE CHALLENGE FILLED
        BOSTON, May 19 — This field for this year's Chase Corporate Challenge Road Race, set for Tuesday, June 26, is filled, according to event manager Conventures, Inc. New England's largest race, with 12,000 participants, covering 3.5 miles through downtown Boston, filled faster than ever before.
        Other New England road running events which have already reached their entry limit are the June 19 Mount Washington Road Race and the August 15 Falmouth Road Race.

        WAKEFIELD, RI, May 8 — Jacob Freeman (Senior, Bishop Hendricken High School, Warwick, RI) set a new U.S. high school 12# hammer throw record with a throw of 249'06". Freeman's winning and record throw was in the Rick Schomp Memorial Invitational at South Kingstown Junior High School, Wakefield, RI on May 8, 1999.

NEW US THROWS RECORDS
High School 12# Hammer Throw Record

        RI, April 12 — Jacob Freeman, a senior at Bishop Hendricken High School in Warwick, RI, set a new U.S. national high school 12# hammer throw record on April 12 with a throw of 242'08". Freeman's winning and record throw was in a Rhode Island Interscholastic League Central Division meet at Bishop Hendricken High School. The old record was 231'11" set by Manny Silverio of North Bergen, NJ in 1976.


Petronoff ups Masters Javelin Mark
        WALNUT CA, April 18 — Tom Petranoff (Cranston RI / MF Athletics) picked up where he left off last year by winning the javelin at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut CA April 18 in a new masters world record. His throw of 76.45 meters (251 feet and 0 inches) - gave him the overall win at the meet, and upped his own existing record by an even foot.

Official of the Year
        RANDOLPH MA, March— Ralph Lord of Lexington was presented the W.Scott McFetridge Award as the organization's exemplary official for the year at the Mass. Track & Field Officials Association spring banquet. Retired as athletic director and past boy's track coach at Lexington HS, Lord has turned his energies to officiating and promoting safety in the Pole Vault. A former member of the National High School Federation rules committee, he was instrumental in establishing safety clinics to instruct high school coaches on competently coaching the pole vault. He now devotes much of his time to working at track meets at all levels. He is a Boston Marathon official and on the organizing committee of the Lexington Battle Green 10K.


BOSTON MARATHON - TOP TEAM RESULTS
BAA wins Men's Title; Greater Lowell again tops Masters

        BOSTON, April 19 — Host BAA won the men's team title in the 1999 Boston Marathon Their time of 7:30:14 beat the West Side Runners Club of New York City who clocked 7:38:07 Greater Lowell Road Runners, led by John Barbour's 7th place in the 40+ individual race, again won the masters team title. Their time of 7:40:03 was good enough to rank 3rd overall when combined with the open. Forerunners RC took the women's open (8:49:24) over the BAA (9:18:46), while the Atlanta TC Masters Women edged the BAA in that division 9:33:56 to 9:44:34.

NEW ENGLANDERS TAKE HOME GOLD AT NCAA DIII CHAMPIONSHIPS
        ADA, OH March 15 — Five New England athletes won gold medals at this weekend's NCAA Division III championships. Geoff Goetz of Brandeis won his third title in the 800, while Rob Mitchell of Amherst added another win in the 1500. Wheaton College women won their first ever NCAA team championship, taking the title with 43 points after a second place finish in 1998. Congratulations to head coach Paul Souza, staff, and athletes.

        Also winning National championships were Damian Larkins, Springfield, Shot Put, 56'2"; Deshawnda Williams, Wheaton, 400, 56.24; Caitlin Murphy, Tufts, 800, 2:13.39.


NEW ENGLAND HIGH SCHOOLERS SET NATIONAL RECORDS
        BOSTON, Mar 13-14 — Two New England athletes and one team set National records at the National Scholastic Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track this past weekend. Samantha Shepard of Weston MA regained the national high school girls pole vault record with a 12'7 1/2" jump at the National Scholastic Championships on Saturday.

Jacob Freeman of Bishop Hendricken HS in RI upped his own record in the 25 lb weight throw with a toss of 77'2". Manchester Central HS of New Hampshire lowered the standard in the 4 x 800 relay, carrying the baton to a 9:07.85 clocking. Results on the Track & Field page.

DOW NATIONAL RACE WALK CHAMPION
Joanne Dow at 1999 National used with permission from © 1999 David Monti Race Results Weekly         ATLANTA, GA, Feb 26 — Joanne Dow of Bedford, NH took the lead in the 3000 meter race walk at the USA Track & Field National Indoor Championships and never let go. Holman, Fleming run World Championship Times
        BOSTON, Feb 21 — Kathy Fleming (1500m) of Natick and Steve Holman (3000m) of Washington DC ran to times that bettered World Championships qualifying standards at the USATF New England Limited meet at Boston U's Commonwealth Armory on Sunday. To make the USA team, they will have to be among the top 2 finishers at the USATF National Championships in Atlanta on February 27 who have made the standard.
        Eight times in the Limited Meet bettered qualifying times for the USA Nationals.

Wuyke sets World Masters 800 Mark
    SOUTH ORANGE, NJ, Feb 14, 1998 — William Wuyke, track coach at Connecticut College in New London, CT, set a world masters (age 40+) indoor 800 meter record of 1:54.96 at the Seton Hall Invitational in South Orange, New Jersey on Sunday, February 14. The time breaks the 1:55.5 standard set by Ken Popejoy of the USA in 1993.
    "My team has really helped me achieve this mark", noted Wuyke after the race. A 1984 Olympian, the Venezuelan native has a personal best of 1:43.54 at the 800 meter distance (set in 1986) which, at the time, was among the top 10 in the world. Sunday's race was only his third race back after a six year layoff.
    He has his sights set on running even faster this winter, as well as going after the outdoor record this summer.


Sullivan wins Junior National Cross Country Championship
        TACOMA WA, Feb 13 — Erin Sullivan of Mt.Mansfield HS in Jericho VT won the USATF Junior National Cross Country and with it, her first berth on a USA National Team. She will be among the leaders of the US squad at the Worlds in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in March.
        Amy Rudolph (Reebok, Providence RI) successfully defended her 4 kilometer U.S. cross country title against a strong field. Also making the US team is Molly Watcke (New Balance, W.Newbury MA) who ran to her second straight spot on the Senior Women's 4K team. Ellen O'Neil (Dartmouth College) will serve as Junior Women's Team Coach at the Worlds.

Boston to Host 2000 National XC
        TACOMA WA, Feb 14 — The 2000 USA Track & Field Fall Cross Country Championships have been awarded to the New England association of USATF; the meet will be held in Boston on November 26, 2000. The award was made at meetings held in conjunction with the USATF Winter Nationals/ World Championship Trials races held in Tacoma, Washington, this past weekend.
        This will be the fourth time for the Nationals at Franklin Park in the past two decades; the meet was also at Boston's famous site in 1984, 1991, and 1995. The meet will be directed by USATF New England with the cooperation of the Boston Parks & Recreation Department.


Alden Invitational/USATF-NE Championship Meet
PROVIDENCE RI, Feb 8 — Nearly 500 open and collegiate athletes competed at the Alden Invitational/USATF New England Championships at Brown University in Providence RI on February 7. Two athletes achieved qualifying marks for the upcoming USA National Championships; Maryanne Torrellas (Clinton CT) in the 3000 meter racewalk, and Mark McGehearty (Providence RI) in the 35 lb weight throw.
       The Alden Cup, given by Brown track supporter Vern Alden, is awarded to the outstanding male and female athletes of the meet; this year's selectees are Mark McGehearty and Nicole Hill. McGehearty's throw of 70' 9 3/4" in the weight was truly the top men's performance, while Brown sophomore Hill was the meet's only double winner - 55m hurdles (8.17) and 200m (25.33.)

US RECORDS set in Women's 800 and Pole Vault at 1999 New Balance Invitational in Boston
BOSTON, Feb 8 — Two American Records at New Balance Invitational Melissa Mueller scored her second US indoor record in two days, clearing 4.50 meters (14'9") at the Reggie Lewis Center on February 7.
        Suzie Hamilton's 1:58.92 for 800 meters makes here the sixth fastest ever in the world at that distance indoors. While the currently listed record is 1:58.9 set by Mary Slaney in 1980, that was a 'hand time' and a 'split; Hamilton's electronic clocking is intrinsicly superior and will likely be approved as the US best.
