Part-time Collegiate Coaching Positions Available

        The Mass. Institute of Technology (MIT) women's track program in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is looking for two part-time assistant coaches. One is a distance running coach for cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track. The position begins in late August and runs through the end of the outdoor season in May. The second is a field events coach focusing on the throwing events. That position is for the indoor and outdoor seasons, beginning in November. Practices are run daily in late afternoon. M.I.T. is an NCAA Division III school, a top 3 team finisher in the women's indoor New Englands, and had several NCAA DIII National qualifiers in 2000.         Endicott College needs a part-time head cross country coach for its combined men's and women's program. The position runs from August 30 thru November 10. Endicott is a small co-ed Division III school located north of Boston in Beverly, Massachusetts. Candidates need a bachelor's degree and experience with distance training regimens. The salary is $4K. THREE LOCAL WINNERS AT US JUNIOR NATIONALS

        Denton TX, June 23-24 -- A trio of throwers earned spots on the USA junior national team at the USATF Junior National Championships. Shot putters Laura Gerraughty (Nashua NH) and Jeff Chakouian (Seekonk MA), both New England high school record holders, won their specialty; Chakouian's winning 59'10 1/4" with the 16 pound college/open shot was only bettered by one New England collegian this past season, while Gerraughty remained undefeated and followed her win with a third place in the hammer.
        Hammerman Josh McCaughey of Rhode Island's Bishop Hendricken HS continued his dominence of the ball-and-chain spinning 204'9" to win with the open implement. <More>

THROWERS LAND GOLD at SCHOLASTIC MEET

        Four New Englanders won gold at the Footlocker National Scholastic Meet in Raleigh NC June 16-17.
        Laura Gerraughty (Nashua NH) upped her national HS leading mark to 51'11 1/4" to win the shot put (and she also made the medal stand in the hammer and discus). Rhode Islanders Josh McCaughey (Bp.Hendricken) and Katie Johnson (Warwick) won their respective hammer throws, and Sean Furey (Methuen MA) took the javelin title. Manchester Central (NH) girls ran second in both the 4x800 and Distance Medley relays.

TWILIGHT MEETS AT NORTHEASTERN CONTINUE ON JUNE 3

        Twilight Track & Field action returns to Northeastern University on Saturday, June 3. Feature events include the 800, 1500, and 5000 for both men and women. The 5K will have an international caliber field including Providence resident Mark Carroll (Ireland), Sean Creighton (Australia), the US Army's Dan Browne, and Boston's Brian Baker. Last week, six athletes bettered US Olympic Trials qualifying marks; more are expected this week.


MIT SEEKS ASSISTANT COACH 6/30/00 -- This position has been filled - Thank you.

        MIT is seeking to hire a part-time assistant coach for Men's Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field. The responsibilities include coaching and administering both horizontal and vertical jumps, and knowledge of NCAA rules on competition and compliance. The time committment will be from Nov.1 through May 31. Practice times are 4:00-7:30 with most competitions being held on Saturdays. Prior experience in coaching these events is necessary. Championship Meets produce record breaking performances

        May 27 -- Jeff Chakouian of Seekonk MA threw the shot put 66'10 1/4" at the Mass. Class D meet to shatter the state and all-New England record in the event. In the Class B meet, Xaverian's Derek Anderson broke the 22 year old state record in the discus, tossing the platter 178'1". The Mass. All State meet runs at Norwell HS on June 3; check www.mstca.org for results. In the college ranks, Raheim Greenridge of Wheaton (Norton MA) broke the NCAA Division III high jump record, soaring 7'2 1/2" at the Nationals. Teammates Rob Tyson (long jump, 25'5 1/2") and Beth Castagno (high jump, 5'8 1/2") also earned national gold medals.

BEANEY TAKES NATIONAL ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP

        May 13, Grand Rapids MI -- Kristen Beaney (Reebok Boston/Wayland MA) ran 1:28:53 to win the USA 25K championship at the Old Kent River Run in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Saturday. She finished second overall to Svetlana Zakharova of Russia, who ran 1:27:35 It was her first US title, and longest race Beaney has attempted. Her next race will be an attempt to reach the US Olympic Trials "A" standard in the 10,000 meters on the track.


VERMONTERS MORSE, WEST WIN AT MT.KEARSAGE, LEAD MOUNTAIN CIRCUIT

        Warner NH, May 6 -- Eric Morse (Berlin VT/CMS) ran away from the field to win the 8.5 mile Mt.Kearsage race on Saturday. Morse was the 1999 mountain circuit champion and showed that he was ready to repeat as winner this year. Craig Fram in second broke the master's record for the course by 6 minutes. Suzy West (Putney VT), a member of the 1999 World Championship team, was an easy winner in the women's division.

JUNIOR OLYMPIC SITE SET FOR RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE IN PROVIDENCE

        May 1 - The USATF New England Junior Olympic Championship meet will be held on Saturday, June 17, at Rhode Island College (RIC) in Providence RI. Look for the new entry form will be on this website on May 7. Junior Olympic procedures and events can be found in our Youth section.


BOSTON MARATHON TEAM RESULTS

        Local clubs fared well in the team competition at this week's Boston Marathon. Six of the top ten mens' Open teams were local, led by the Greater Boston TC in third (7:42:31) and Whirlaway in fourth (7:44:06). Others were BAA "A", sixth, 7:47:13, Greater Lowell, seventh, 7:47:16, Gate City Striders, eighth, 7:452:42, and BAA "B", tenth, 7:59:32.
        Highest placing Women's Open team was BAA "A", sixth, 9:35:35, followed by North Medford Club in eighth, 9:37:30.
        Masters men found BAA "A" (another) sixth ,8:38:03, Greater Lowell "A" eighth, 8:43:11, and Cape Cod AC tenth, 8:44:22. BAA also led the masters women in third at 9:48:45, CMS sixth in 10:10:10, Winners Circle eighth in 10:29:34, and Cambridge Sports Union ninth, 10:30:45.

ULTRA RUNNERS EARN NATIONAL MEDALS

        Jim Garcia (Westford MA/CMS) took the bronze medal at the USATF National 100Km Championship on March 25 in Pittsburgh. The winner of last year's Chancellor Challenge in Boston, Garcia was 4th overall finishing in 7:15:40. Race winner Howard Nippert of Virginia clocked 7:01:06 in only his 2nd race over 100Km. Conditions were warm on the 1+ mile loop.
        Dana Parrot of Derby CT, in her first attempt at the distance was the women's winner; her time was 8:22:21. Both runners will represent the US at the World 100Km Challenge in September in the Netherlands. The top 3 finishers are automatic selections while two additional runners will be added based on performance history.



HONORS GO TO TRACK AND FIELD OFFICIALS

        Seven New Englanders representing the three USATF associations in the six state region have been selected to officiate at the USA Olympic Trials in Sacramento July 16-23. The officials are:
        Gerry Cantor (Nashua NH), Pat Lavelle (Holyoke MA), and Dave Post (Weymouth MA) of the New England association.
        Diane Fournier (Bath ME) from the Maine association.
        Bob Fontaine (Bethlehem), Maryanne Torrellas (Clinton), and Diane Wright (New Haven) from the Connecticut association.

        The New England association of USA Track & Field has selected five certified officials to receive the organization's prestigious Outstanding Service Award. The award is presented once each Olympiad - every four years - to a small number of officials in USATF's 57 local associations. Recipients are those who have supported the sport by working all types of meets at the local level
