RATCLIFFE SCORED NE HS BEST IN MILE AT MARTINEZ MEET July 2, 2016
Concord-Carlisle (MA) HS senior Thomas Ratcliffe established a new state and New England High School mile record at the Hoka One One Adrian Martinez Classic in Concord MA on Thursday. Running against an elite field on his home track, the Stanford bound Ratcliffe clocked a 4:01.50 for eighth overall, breaking the previous state and New England prep standard of 4:01.89 set by Garrett O'Toole of the Middlesex School of Concord at the same meet in 2014. SHAW, JESSEMAN ROLL TO 20K WINS
September 6, Acton MAEthan Shaw and Erica Jesseman covered a rolling 20K faster than their New England challengers to win USATF 20K Championship titles at Sunday's Seasons 20K in Acton MA. A combination of continually rolling terrain between miles 2 and 10, and increasingly warmer temperatures added challenge to the distance of the first time championship event.
After jockeying for position in the opening miles, Shaw (B.A.A.) went on to the race win in 1:02:55, a half minute up on Louis Serafini (Heartbreakers), who assumes the overall GP lead after 6 races. With Brian Harvey in third, the B.A.A. had the frontrunning positions to collect the team win.
Women's medal positions were static after 3 miles, as race winner Sonia Samuels, visiting from Great Britain, was first in in 1:10:19. New England champion Jesseman was second overall in 1:13:54, 13 seconds up on Katie Misuraca (B.A.A.), as those two led their clubs to first and second place finishes, respectively. Top Master Sheri Piers (Dirigo) took the final podium position.
Underscoring the quality in New England road championships, the top 5 men's times and top 4 women's times would have been worthy of a top 25 placing at the USA National 20K a day later in New Haven CT, with the New England course covering much tougher topography. 373 finished the out-loop-back course utilizing mostly rural roads.

LOWRY, NAGEL TAKE NE TITLES AT BOBBY DOYLE 5 MILER
August 9, Narragansett RIDan Lowry and Laura Nagel earned New England 5 Mile Championship titles in course record times at the Bobby Doyle 5 Miler in Narragansett RI on Sunday. Cool summer temperatures and overcast skies helped lead to fast times on the coastal circuit, as far south as any association championship has been held. Depth of the results was evident by several numbers; 16 finishers under 25:00, 58 under 28:00, and the first master not until 39th place. 663 finished the 5 Mile double loop coruse.
Lowry, representing the B.A.A., missed the overall win by once second as the final sprint to his 23:52 time left him a step behind Mousaab Hadout, a 28:21 10K runner out of Morocco. Providence College grad Nagel (unattached) recorded 26:40 at the tape to outdistance her closest rival, Heather Cappello (B.A.A.), by 1:14. The B.A.A. won both open team crowns. Jan Holmquist (Whirlaway RT) set another W70-74 US record with her time of 36:41.
The event, which raises funds for state distance runner scholarships and a youth running fund, recognizes the late Bobby Doyle who was the state's premier distance runner for many years. His accomplishments included a 5th place Boston Marathon finish, all American honors in cross country, and representing the USA in the 1979 Pan American Games. Many legends of Rhode Island road running were on hand as part of the race committee.
